On horizontal hvac units with the return duct attached to the side of the air handler the filter often fits in a slot on the return air intake side of the unit. Attic hvac systems save space. Well mainly it s a way to save space. Your ac s air filter is usually found in these 2 places.

Just had to replace my furnace coil and condenser this weekend. Find the right filter size. So why put an hvac system up in the attic at all. Only the condenser is outside of course.

This is a grille located on the ceiling or wall where air enters your hvac system. An outdoor unit which houses the fan condenser and compressor and an indoor unit which holds the evaporator and fan. Air filters come in all different sizes and range from about an inch thick to a few inches thick. This arrow needs to point in the direction of your hvac s airflow.

Btw in east texas all furnaces coils blowers go in the attic. Most updated central air conditioned homes have a new air conditioner split system meaning the ac is broken up into parts. Return vent with grate in place on the left and open return vent without the grate where you can see the filter and ductwork on the right. Went with a furnace with a pull out filter.
